Every year since 2009, the Hall of FAME has recognized distinguished ME alumni whose work exemplifies excellence, leadership, and service to society. The roster includes industry-shaping executives, lifelong public servants, pioneering entrepreneurs, and Ateneans whose impact extends far beyond professional success. This year, FAME proudly adds to this legacy by honoring Kenneth S. Yang (ME 1986)—a visionary leader whose career has reshaped not just a brand, but an entire industry and the communities it touches.
A Legacy of Leadership Rooted in People
Kenneth Yang’s journey with McDonald’s Philippines began in the most grounding way possible: as a crew member. That first role sparked a 35-year path marked by grit, humility, and a deep respect for people. After graduating from ME in 1986 and earning his MBA from the University of Chicago, he returned to McDonald’s and rose through key roles in restaurant management: supply chain, operations, and business development before becoming managing director in 2003 and president & CEO in 2005.
Under his leadership, McDonald’s has expanded to 815 stores (as of September 2025) with ambitious plans to reach 1,000 stores by 2028 and 1,500 by 2035. But beyond growth in numbers, Kenneth’s influence is most visible in the culture he built—one where people are placed at the center of every decision.
McDonald’s Philippines remains the only QSR in the country to have never practiced contractualization, employing 65,000 directly hired workers, including working students, senior citizens, and differently abled individuals. For Kenneth, success isn’t just about building a bigger system—it’s about uplifting the people and communities who make that system thrive.
Redefining the Customer Experience
Kenneth has consistently pushed the Philippine QSR industry forward through innovation that meets people where they are.
His leadership introduced:
- 24/7 stores that made fast, reliable service available round the clock
- The expansion of drive-thru nationwide
- The modernization of restaurant formats
- Self-ordering kiosks and cashless payments
- Delivery platforms and a loyalty app that redefined convenience
These initiatives didn’t just improve customer experience—they helped transform consumer habits and set new standards for speed, accessibility, and service.
Scaling Impact Through Education and Social Good
If innovation defines the McDonald’s business, advocacy defines its heart. Kenneth’s unwavering belief that education is the great equalizer is embodied in his work as president of Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Philippines.
Through RMHC:
- 13 million+ children have benefited from the Read to Learn program
- 12,000 public schools have received support
- 51 Bahay Bulilit centers provide early childhood learning spaces
- 1,069,000+ meals have been served through Kindness Kitchen
- 930 pieces of upcycled furniture have been repurposed for over 2,000 students through ReClassified
- The first RMHC Family Room opened in 2024, with 1,000+ visits in six months
- Special hiring and education initiatives (with DOLE, LGUs, CHED, DepEd, DSWD, PBED, and USAID) continue to support thousands of youth, students, and senior citizens annually
During the pandemic, Kenneth also helped lead Ingat Angat, a private sector effort that enabled businesses to reopen safely and responsibly—another testament to his commitment to collective good.
A Hall of FAME Awardee Defined by ME Values
In presenting the award, the Hall of FAME Committee highlighted the attributes that define its honorees: trailblazer, superior performer, transformative leader, change agent, and a person for others.
Kenneth embodies each one.
He has:
- Transformed the business model of one of the country’s biggest employers
- Set new standards for customer-centric innovation
- Proven that business growth and social impact can and must go hand in hand
- Created tens of thousands of jobs and opportunities nationwide
- Strengthened communities through education, advocacy, and inclusive hiring
Having been named this year's Hall of FAME Awardee, he became the fourth honoree from ME 1986, joining Martin Lorenzo, Minette Navarrete, and Francis del Val—yet another testament to the batch’s enduring contribution to industry and society.
A Life Grounded in Purpose
Beyond corporate leadership and social advocacy, Kenneth is also known as a devoted family man and a passionate golfer. But at his core, he is a builder—of businesses, opportunities, communities, and futures.
“You put people first.”
This simple philosophy has shaped his leadership and legacy. It continues to fuel the growth of McDonald’s Philippines and the positive impact it creates across the nation.
Once again, FAME proudly recognizes Kenneth S. Yang, ME 1986, as the Hall of FAME awardee for 2025—a shining example of excellence, service, and Ateneans at their very best.
